Volunteer Frequently Asked Questions

The reasons for wanting to become a fire fighter or emergency medical technician are as diverse as our volunteers.  For some, it is the realization of a childhood dream; for others it is the desire to give back to our community or to make a difference in the lives of others.  Some of us have friends or relatives who have encouraged us to “Answer the Call”.   Becoming a volunteer with fire and rescue requires time and dedication but the benefits are endless. Here are some of our frequently ask questions to help you learn what it takes to be a volunteer.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Are there any requirements to being an operational volunteer?
Prospective volunteers are required to clear a criminal background check and an entry medical examination provided by Loudoun County.
Are there age restrictions for volunteers?
There is no maximum age.  You can be a firefighter at the age of 16 and an EMT-Basic at 18.  Most stations accept volunteers once they are 16 years old and a few stations have a cadet program for our 14-15 year olds.
Do I need to live in Loudoun County to serve as a volunteer of one of the 17 volunteer companies in Loudoun County?
No, you do not need to live in Loudoun County to volunteer.  Approximately 30% of the volunteers live outside of Loudoun County.
May I volunteer as both a fire fighter and an emergency medical provider?
Yes.  You may volunteer for one or both.  It depends on your desire and ability to commit.  Some of our companies are both Fire and EMS and you may train for both Fire fighter and EMT.  You may also join two companies should your company not provide both Fire and EMS.  Operating as a Fire fighter and EMT requires additional hours of training and possibly additional duty crews.
How much time will I be expected to give as a member?
The exact time requirements vary from company to company.  After you complete your initial training then most volunteer companies set up schedules based on your availability.  Routinely operational members will provide a 12-hour shift in station weekly.  Hours vary from company to company and your level of participation within the company.
What is the cost of the required training?
The required training for service as a volunteer is provided free of charge by your station or by Loudoun County Fire and Rescue.
How much will I pay for my protective clothing?
All necessary protective clothing is provided to you by the volunteer company and Loudoun County Fire-Rescue at no cost to you.
I have current training certifications.  Will they count toward my training requirements?
Virginia has agreements for reciprocity with several states for the acceptance of both Fire and EMS certifications.  Loudoun requires the completion of a challenge exam for EMS certification if obtained in another jurisdiction of Virginia or a state in which there is a reciprocal agreement.
Who provides insurance coverage for my activities as a volunteer?
Both Loudoun County and the volunteer company provide insurance coverage for volunteer members.  Coverage includes automobile liability while operating fire and rescue vehicles, accidental death and disability coverage and worker’s compensation.
Are volunteers directly compensated or paid for their services?
No, however there are benefits such as retirement and tuition reimbursement.  See Benefits for more information.
